Roe Deer Mating Season – A Reminder for Drivers and Nature Visitors to Stay Alert

From late July to mid-August, roe deer are in their mating season, also known as the rut. During this period, both bucks and does become much more active, increasing the likelihood of unexpected road crossings.

While chasing each other during the rut, roe deer may suddenly run across roads without warning. Drivers are therefore advised to take extra care, especially at dawn and dusk, and on roads passing through forests or alongside meadows. If you see a doe crossing the road, there is a good chance that a buck will follow shortly afterwards.

We also encourage visitors to forests and nature areas to help preserve the peace of wildlife during this sensitive period. Please keep dogs on a leash at all times and avoid unnecessarily disturbing wild animals.

The roe deer rut is a fascinating natural phenomenon. As the buck pursues the doe, they often run repeatedly along the same route, creating distinctive circular tracks in the grass known as "roe rings" or "fairy rings." Another remarkable feature of roe deer is their delayed implantation, which ensures that fawns are born the following spring, when environmental conditions are most favourable.
